Chapter 2
A few miles away from the events at Kim’s house, two men, Chris and Ken, were nonchalantly hanging out in their college dorm room. Chris was playing a video game while Ken was writing an essay for his English class. Ken was a tall black male with short black hair with a few short whiskers of a beard. As he wrote he wore a plain black shirt with tan Khaki pants and black sneakers. Chris sported a white flannel shirt with black jeans and sneakers. He had black hair that stood over his forehead slightly, and light complexion with brown eyes, just like Ken’s eyes. Both men had the reputation of being “players.” However, lately, for reasons Ken couldn’t explain, he had thoughts of settling down with one girl.
“Life after college.” Ken wondered aloud.
“What?” Chris asked.
“What do you think life after college is going to be like?” Ken repeated the question.
“I don’t know,” Chris said, “But I hope it’s parties and sexy girls for at least a few more years.”
“You know though,” Ken said looking up from his paper, “I’ve been thinking about slowing down you know, getting, like that one special lady. You know what I mean?” “No.” was Chris’s simple reply, “I don’t know what you mean.” Chris began to have troubles getting through his game, he moved the controller up, down, and sideways getting more stressed about it.
“I’m serious Chris.” Ken continued, “I mean, this morning I saw that girl Kim, and I just noticed how, smart she is, and attractive…” Lost in thought, Ken had stopped talking, and having lost at the game, Chris threw the controller on the ground and walked over to Ken.
“Your babbling made me lose.” he complained. Getting no response from Ken he felt his forehead with the back of his hand.
“You’re talking crazy talk man. What’s up with you, you don’t have a fever or anything. What are you on, some new chronic or something?”
“I’m not on drugs.” Ken said.
“Well, you must be because you seem to be forgetting that we are the biggest players on campus.”
“Look,” Ken said, “I’m just having a change of heart.”
“Do you not remember the bet we made yesterday to see who could pull together the most hotties at the next party?” Ken began to feel foggy.
“Look, I’m sorry,” he said, “I’ll make it up to you.”
“Man, I need a drink.” Chris complained walking toward their refrigerator.
Lamar was eager to exit the store for he was the smelliest person in there. He wished he had changed his shirt before he left but he was in such a rush to get out of the house that he hadn’t paid attention to how much he stunk.
He began walking, groceries in hand, back home when he noticed Charles jogging towards him.
“Hey Coach!” Charles called out as he got closer to Lamar. The two slapped hands when they reached each other. “What’s up Charles?” Lamar asked. “You staying out of trouble?”
“No,” Charles replied, “Not really.” he said looking back to the prank he pulled earlier on Stephanie and Felicia and snickering. “But I’m trying.”
“Right.” Lamar started, “So have you been balling lately.” Lamar was interested in this question because he had been Charles Basketball coach when he played for their local park.
“Yeah, I have been, a little every now and then. But I’ve been hitting the books more lately, finals and stuff.”
“Now that’s good news.” Lamar praised. Hoping to change the subject Charles mentioned Felicia and Stephanie. “I saw them at the park earlier.”
“Really?” Lamar’s face lit up, “Did Stephanie talk about me?”
“Yeah, she did.” Charles lied, “She said that she wanted to get back with you and that she was still totally in love with you.”
“What? Really?” Lamar exclaimed.
“No. I’m just playing with you coach. I actually dumped trash on them, squirted them with a water gun, and took off.” Lamar laughed humorlessly,
“I should’ve known.”
“Are you going to your sister’s party up in Big Bear?” Charles asked changing the subject again, it would turn out he is very good at doing that.
“I might.” Lamar said, with finality, “Look, I got to go, talk to you later.” Lamar jogged out of the area.
At Lamar’s house, Kim, Chaka, Felicia, and Stephanie were all gathered in Lamar’s room with a small table set in the middle. Couches and other furniture were scattered away from the center of the room. Chaka studied the contents of the Riazza Themsla which she had placed on the table. But she was soon distracted by her eye contacts. Realizing she had misplaced one she grumbled,
“How am I supposed to get this stupid Love spell right if I can’t see the words? Kim, help me find my left eye contact.”
“It’s right here girl,” Kim said, presenting it to Chaka, “Cool your horses. And remind me why we have to do this in Lamar’s room.”
“Because,” Chaka explained, placing her contact in her eye. “There’s the most room in here. We could’ve done it in your room, but you don’t want to move your stuffed animals and furniture out of the way.” That was a complete lie. Chaka had chosen Lamar’s room simply because there had been some kind of force that moved her to do so.
On the other side of the room, Stephanie and Felicia were conversing about Chaka. Once Chaka had her contact lens placed back, she returned to studying the book.
“I think Chaka has finally lost it,” Stephanie whispered to Felicia.
“She’s been into this stuff for years,” Felicia said, “But she’s our friend and we should support her, let’s just go along with it.”
Taking notice of their chat, Kim walked over to Felicia and Stephanie.
“I know you two think Chaka has gone crazy,” she reasoned,
“But this magic stuff of hers might actually be working. I mean, ever since we started doing those small love spells she talks about, I’ve gotten so much attention from Ken it’s not even funny.” Stephanie and Felicia exchanged glances.
“Really?” Felicia scoffed, “You really believe this stuff, or are you just trying to humor us.”
“Come on ladies,” Kim pleaded, “You said you would help.”
“Yeah,” Stephanie said, “But it shouldn’t take no drugs or magic to get a man.”
“Yeah, you’re talking Stephanie.” Felicia said with sarcasm. “I haven’t seen you with one man ever since you and Lamar broke up. And that was what, over a year ago.”
“Are you keeping tabs on who I date or something?”
“Oh, come on.” Kim put in, “We all know you still like Lamar.”
“Well,” Stephanie muttered, “Only a little, I guess, I mean that’s over.” Both Kim and Felicia stared at Stephanie with doubtful glares.
“What?!” Stephanie said in defense.
Uh-huh.” Kim said sarcastically.
Whatever.” Felicia said with the same amount of sarcasm. “Girl don’t deny it.” she continued, “I’ve seen how you check him out, and he looks at you the same way. You two need to get back together.”
“Wait a minute.” Stephanie put in, “How did this little meeting end up about me?” All three girls began fussing and pointing fingers, but only for a few seconds before Chaka cut them off,
“Girls! Please! Stay cool.” she said. “I’ve found the page I was looking for. Now gather around the table like how I told you earlier.” Looking at each other the three girls formed a circle around the table.
“Whatever we have to do,” Kim said, “Let’s do it quickly before Lamar gets home; he’ll be pissed if he catches us in his room.”
“Okay, Okay.” Chaka said. “Hold hands and repeat after me....
