Haptic Inferface Design

The tactile perception and haptics are essential for humans as we gain information of structures and surface properties of physical objects using this sense, and haptics allows us to move and manipulate the physical world around us. The emphasis of this book is put on technologies to artificially manipulate our haptic perception. It starts with a definition of haptics from a physiological point of view and tries to focus on the lost of haptics in the daily routine in order to emphasize the impact of haptics. In the following an overview on products with extraordinary haptic properties builds the bridge to a precise terminology of haptics. In the second part the book considers concretely technical aspects of haptic manipulations, from kinematics over the software design and control to the technologies of sensors and actuators.
